Minnesota, like nearly every other state in the country, is facing a significant budget deficit – almost $6 billion. Only 75 percent of Minnesota students graduate from high school, and of those entering the higher education system, nearly 40 percent need remedial education. Minnesota’s lengthy and cumbersome environmental review and permitting process has forced expansions out of the state. Minnesota’s energy costs continue to rise, and in some communities these costs are now a competitiveness issue.
While these challenges may seem daunting, the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, along with its 2,400 member companies and 130 local chamber partners, stand ready to resolve these issues in ways that move our economy forward. But we need your help and, as we develop our final public policy positions, your advice and counsel.
We believe that Minnesota’s $33 billion general fund can meet the needs of Minnesota citizens and contribute to the development and growth of our economy. Resolving the budget deficit will not be without pain – even for businesses – but we are confident it can be achieved. We have some ideas we would like your thoughts on, and we hope you have some to add to our menu of options.
Our kids deserve to achieve more from their time in our K-12 system. We will work with business and education leaders, and parents, to implement changes that will give Minnesota students a great start toward success in today’s global economy.
Environmental permitting, energy, transportation, health care and other key business issues also remain at the top of our list. All are critical to a growing economy and will be the subject of policy initiatives.
