This year’s production offers a dramatization of the classic tale of a boy whose bag of magic beans surprises everybody. Young Jack, his father having been lost at sea ten years earlier, lives alone with his mother. The two have barely enough money to scrape by, but they manage. That becomes more difficult, however, when the impetuous and impressionable young Jack meets a fast-talking peddler who spins a tale of a blue-eyed stranger and his magic beans. The peddler’s description of the stranger sounds much like Jack’s lost father. Could he still be alive somewhere? And those beans, those magic beans – they are so enticing.
Unable to resist, Jack trades their cow and all the money he and his mother have for those beans. Though his mother is certain he has foolishly allowed himself to be swindled, Jack plants the beans and the next day finds a giant beanstalk that disappears into the clouds. What could possibly be up there?
